I was totally excited for NADA to open. I'm a bit obsessive about packaging so was so happy to see this store opening so close to my home. It is a beautiful store and I'm glad it's in my neighbourhood. I give it 3 stars for the following reasons: 1) the tongs and spoons for scooping food out of the bins should not be IN the bins. Gross! This cannot pass food inspection bylaws I'm sure! 2) prices are very high for most items. I wanted to buy a red pepper but it was about $7/ pound. Even higher than Farmers Market prices. I do understand that their prices will be higher, but I could not shop here on a regular basis. 3) I want to see the price at the counter as I purchase the item. Only the cashier sees the total unless you ask the cashier to show you the price each time he or she rings in the product. I realize the store is still working out some issues so I will definitely be back.
I really hope this store succeeds. I will shop here as long as they are open, but I am privileged enough to be able to afford most of it. The produce is very overpriced compared to Whole Foods and the Farmers Market. The grains are about the same price, and other items (great selection) are sometimes competitive, sometimes not. They pride themselves on sourcing products with a transparent supply chain, which will make the products more expensive. Unfortunately there are no lower-priced options for people who can't afford it. I think some more economic choice will help get more people interested in package-free shopping. Right now it seems like they are trying to attract a niche market that has money to shop at Whole Foods (instead of Famous Foods) but wants to go package-free.
So great that this place has opened up! It's so clean and bright. The technology that is used with the stickers you attach to your jars is very very smart! Mostly priced well, it's pretty much all organic so you pay a premium for that. There is quite a small selection of products but they have a product request list so it looks like they will be increasing the offering soon!
A lot of good thought were given to how this store operates. Good layout, good product options. This is my first experience with a zero waste retail concept. Hilal took the time to answer all my questions, and coached us through the process. She is absolutely awesome. I'm looking forward to coming back for more food shopping!
Wow. When I first stepped into this store last week I was so blown away, everything was so neat and organized and it was just a breath of fresh air. The idea of going into a waste-free store is just new and exciting. Staff were very nice and approachable. The owner was great at explaining all the components and objectives of this grocery store. There were also these really cool tech inspired stickers which would subtract the weight of the container from the food you are buying. I've been looking for metal straws for a while and I finally bought my first! It is just a really nice feeling to know that every little change can contribute to so much in our environment. If you want to start living waste-free this is a great start! Would definitely visit again.
